Background to project:

Bristol City Council launched AskBristol in 2005. Since then it has involved over 2000 people in various consultations and e-petitions. In 2007 the Ministry of Justice gave Bristol City Council e-innovations funding to asses whether projects such as AskBristol would encourage young people to participate more in decision-making processes.
.

Purpose of project:

AskBristol was set up to widen participation and public debate about issues that affect the residents of Bristol, especially amongst young people.
.

Project activities:

AskBristol.com is a website that provides various different ways for Bristolians to participate in public debate and consultations. It contains links to e-petitions, as well as a consultation finder to make it easier for residents to find the discussion they want to join. There is a discussion forum where issues can be debated and where the Council can give feedback once a discussion is closed.
.
The e-petitions section has recently shot to fame because of a recent debate about the removal of graffiti by the artist Banksy. The issue was debated within an AskBristol forum and subsequently became an e-petition in support of this work. The Council have since produced a report on this debate and shifted their policy on graffiti to increase wider public consultation. Where graffiti may be considered art, and there is no objection from the owner of the property involved, the Council will now consult with local residents as to whether the graffiti should be removed.
.
AskBristol is now seeking to integrate video consultations into its website. This will allow a two-way dialogue can take place between the City?s residents and the Council.
