Background to project:

The Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) was set up after three decades of failed attempts to find a solution to the long-term problem of radioactive waste management.

Purpose of project:

The Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) was set up in 2003 to provide independent advice to Government on the long-term management of the UK's solid higher activity radioactive waste.

Project activities:

The process consisted of three stages, with a consistent focus on stakeholder and public engagement throughout its activities.
  • The first stage, Preparation and Trialling, involved working with specialists to draw up preliminary reports, and to design and trial the public and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • The next stage, Framing and Shortlisting, involved a range of stakeholder and public engagement activities whereby the options for a waste management strategy were reviewed and shortlisted.
  • In the final stage, Option assessment, a series of specialist panels reviewed the material and the outputs from the engagement activities, after which a set of recommendations for Government policy were produced.

Project results:

The recommendations were welcomed by the Government, which also praised as groundbreaking the open and transparent process by which they had been created. The Government has since committed to take forward the committees recommendation to explore options for geological disposal of radioactive waste.
