Background to project:Glasgow Women's Library was established in 1991. It grew out of the women's arts-orientated project, Women in Profile (1987), to ensure the visibility of women in the programming of the Glasgow, European City of Culture year (1990).Since 1991 thousands of women have contributed to the growth and success of the Library. The collection has been largely donated and there have been scores of women involved in managing its projects, volunteering and contributing their time, expertise, visions and energies. Purpose of project:Glasgow Women's Library is a provider of information by and about women. It is a popular meeting place for women and its creative, supportive environment acts as a catalyst for projects, friendships and laughter.GWL Aims: To meet both the needs of women looking for information, and those of others seeking information on a range of women's issues. To collect and archive such information and materials so that they are accessible. To encourage the involvement of as many women as possible in developing the Library and its related resources and services and in contributing to the documentation, collection, creation and use of materials. To provide and promote lifelong learning, training, education, skill-sharing, volunteering, and employment opportunities for women. To provide a high quality service for users, enquirers and members. Project activities:The Library offers a number of opportunities including helping women with their reading and writing, a wide range of creative courses and events, and a lending library and helpdesk accessed by thousands of women. The Library is well known for its original events and for its lively learning programmes. First time visitors and old friends are always assured of a warm welcome.
