Background to project:Online Communities (Oncom) operates a network of local portals in West London for the use of all communities. It is run on a non-profit basis by volunteers.. Purpose of project:The Online Communities network was founded in 1997 and since then it has made hundreds of free websites for campaigns, councillors, the police, charities, amenity groups and voluntary organisations. Online Communities has been funded by the voluntary financial contributions from members of the community.. Project activities:The Oncom Letters pages, called the Vox Pop, offers a public platform to express views on local issues. To publish letters on the Vox Pop you need to register with the website first. All letters posted must comply with our Code of Conduct which you can see HERE . Letters about local issues should be published in the corresponding local forum, borough wide forum should only be used for issues that have borough wide relevance. Please do not post the same letter in more than one forum.. Our Content Management System (CMS) contains many hundreds of web pages allowing councillors, police and community organisations etc to update their own webpages instantly without any web expertise or special equipment. . Our local news system provides individual news pages for each area and these provide links to hundreds of stories every year. We provide proprietory newsboxes which allow other websites to display our news stories live on their sites. News is provided by local news sources, the community groups, local organisations, citizen journalists and other registered users of our network. .
