Date when the project started:

2006

Date when the project ended/project ongoing:

2007

Background to project:

The Neighbourhood Initiatives Foundation was appointed by Voluntary Action Leicester to undertake a Planning for Real (TM) consultation exercise on the St. Matthew's Estate in Leicester.
.

Purpose of project:

The findings from the consultation will be used to feed into the development of the Neighbourhood Management Delivery Plan, and will build upon a highly successful piece of work that was undertaken by St. Matthews Area Forum and local residents in conjunction with Michael Bell Associates - Building on our Success in 2003.
.

Project activities:

Staff from Voluntary Action Leicester and the Contact Project worked with 60 children, from years 4 and 6, at Taylor Road School to produce the 3D model.
.
544 residents attended the 18 consultation sessions and a total of 2,546 cards were placed highlighting improvements that could be made to the St. Matthew's Estate and concerns that residents have about the area in general.
.
The population of St Matthews is extremely diverse with the largest ethnic groups being Black African, Asian and White British. The estate has large numbers of new arrivals and is home to Somalian, West Indian, Portuguese, Russian, Monserrattion, Zimbabwean, Kurdish and Irish residents amongst others.
.
Although, the estate clearly faces some significant challenges many of those consulted indicated that they felt some pride in the estate and that it had improved substantially in recent years. Consultation sessions were promoted through distribution of coloured flyers and posters plus announcements on BBC Radio Leicester.
.

Project results:

The Planning for Real (TM) consultation has revealed that a considerable amount of improvements have been made to the estate since the original report in 2003.
.
However, there is still much work to be undertaken to improve the quality of life for residents living on the estate. It is evident that local organisations are very much in touch with the needs of local residents.
.
They have shown a willingness to listen to the views of local people and continue to develop their services to meet the needs. Although it was apparent that some residents are unaware of services which already exist on the estate, the recently completed St. Matthews Directory of Services should dramatically increase residents' awareness of services as a copy will be delivered to every address on the estate.
.
In addition to some of the improvements and interventions highlighted through the consultation, the Neighbourhood Management Initiative will now use the findings of this project to inform its neighbourhood delivery plan and drive forward further improvements for local people.
