2005

Background to project:

Swale Borough Council (Community Development and Planning Departments) appointed Neighbourhood Initiatives to undertake a "PfR"consultation exercise in the communities of Queenborough and Rushenden on the Isle of Sheppey
.

Purpose of project:

The purpose of the consultation exercise was to ensure that the communities of Queensborough and Rushenden were given a say about the future regeneration of the area. The "Planning for Real" (TM) approach was fully supported by SEEDA, the lead agency for the regeneration process and the findings of the consultation exercise were fed into the master plan developed by Rummey Design Associates.
.

Project activities:

25 Planning for Real (TM) events were held (attended by over 900 residents - just over 29% of the population) which resulted in over 5,000 suggestions being placed on the model. The process has enabled residents to highlight their concerns about issues in their neighbourhood in an open, informal and anonymous manner.
.

Project results:

The consultation process has provided a mechanism for many people to become more active in the community and it is crucial that opportunities are developed to continue their involvement.
.
The Master Planning process will take over from the consultation and build on the momentum created; it will be important for the community to know how the consultation results have linked into the future plans for the area.
.
It will also be important to highlight the suggestions that cannot be achieved within the master plan and explain why this is not possible.
