Background to project:NIF was appointed by South Somerset District Council to undertake a Planning for Real (TM) consultation exercise on the Westfield Estate in Yeovil, Somerset as a number of problems had been emerging in relation to community safety issues - mainly around the public open spaces.. It was decided that it would be more beneficial to undertake a holistic neighbourhood based consultation exercise to seek out some of the causes of the problems experienced locally. . Purpose of project:The purpose of the consultation exercise was to ensure that the people living on the Westfield Estate had an opportunity to express their concerns about the area and to think about what improvements are needed locally..
Project activities:A large 3D model of the Estate was produced by Year 6 pupils attending Parcroft Junior School.. 14 consultation events were held at many locations across the estate and resulted in 433 people attending to highlight their concerns and put forward suggestions for improvements. Two prioritisation and action planning events were held, both of which were well attended by local residents and; at the second event, were accompanied by 26 Service Providers from Somerset County Council, South Somerset District Council and other agencies that have an interest in the Westfield Estate. . During the consultation events a total of 1,367 suggestions were made highlighting issues of concern to residents and ideas for improving the estate. . Project results:The consultation process has provided a mechanism for many people to become more active in the community. A group of local people has shown a high commitment to the Planning for Real (TM) process and has met regularly for many months and could provide a solid foundation to developing a community association / organisation for the area.. If a community organisation could be developed it would provide a mechanism for even more local people to get involved and it could bring much needed funding into the area to support the delivery of the action plan and enable them to take a greater ownership of the resulting improvements. .
