Background to project:

Online social forums have become increasingly popular over the past decade or so. Quiet Riots was launched in 2009 as the prototype for a new type of action-orientated web-based social networking software.
.

Purpose of project:

Quiet Riots is a new networking and deliberation website, providing users with a forum to discuss and act on issues that interest them. The project also seeks to use Quiet Riots as a way for large organisations to engage efficiently with their service users.
.

Project activities:

Like other social networking sites Quiet Riots allows users to join groups and post on group discussions. The project is still in its BETA stage; as a consequence there a relatively low number of users and you need to ask a central administrative team to set up a new Riot (topic). In the near future the project aims to allow users to join without permission and create their own Riots autonomously.
.
As well as facilitating discourse between individuals on specific topics, Quiet Riots seeks to turn deliberation into action. Every time an organisation or company is the topic of a debate, the Quiet Riots team sends them an open letter summarising the deliberation. Organisations are then free to join Quiet Riots and contribute to the discussion, thus facilitating a dialogue between the two parties.
