Background to project:The Rev Paul Howard from St Martins Church in Talke, Stoke on Trent felt there had been a need for the development of a local Community Action Plan and felt that the church could play an active role in this process. He felt that using Planning for Real would be the best option in giving the church a great opportunity to engage the community in what was seen as real consultation. Local community representatives and service providers were trained in the consultation process and formed a Consultation Steering Group which was the driving force for the development of the local community action plans.Purpose of project:To create a Community Action Plan using Planning for RealProject activities:Shortly after the Steering Group was formed, with support from Neighbourhood Initiatives, they undertook a series of successful community consultation exercises and priortisiation and action planning sessions. At the same time as the community consultations took place, NIF, through its Youth Development Programme, worked in partnership with Clough Hall Technology School to engage pupils in the development of the community action plan. We saw this is a great opportunity to consult with young people about their area and also had a number of benefits including: Local people in the Talke community, along with pupils from Clough Hall School, have now developed a series of draft action plans with a number of key issues raised together with recommendations for change. It is anticipated that the focus for the young people will be to prioritise some of their results and to work on an action plan to take some of the suggestions forward through the School Council and the Youth Service. There is also an aim to bring together the PfR Steering Group and members of the Clough Hall School Youth Council to work constructively in partnership. Project results:Project Results Over 4000+ suggestions and ideas put forward by local people The development of local community action plans Over 300 participants in the consultation process A real opportunity for local people to have a say on issues affecting them locally Building better relationships between local community representatives, service providers and other stakeholders Buildings a firm relationship between community representatives and young people and giving young people a real opportunity to have a say.
