Background to project:The Walsall Participatory Appraisal Network started in 1997 as a small project working with young people and has developed into a network of 40 organisations. It is active in the northern English town of Walsall.Purpose of project:The network has trained many people in Participatory Appraisal who are then able to go back to their organisations and train others.Project activities:Besides training, the network provides support, undertakes consultation projects, facilitates workshops and offers expert advice in participatory methodology.Project results:The network has both helped develop the engagement culture of existing organisations like the Caldmore Area Housing Association Limited and also helped set up new networks and institutions, like the Service Users' Network of Walsall Mental Health Services. An evaluation of the Walsall Participatory Appraisal Network training found that all those taking part viewed it positively and felt that they had learned approaches that could be applied in their own work and lives.
