Background to project:

In recent years over two thousand peple per year have been moving to Inverness and the surrounding areas. The Tornagrain site was identified by The Highland Council as suitable for accommodating some of the growth.

The design team was put together by Duany Plater-Zyberk (urban planners) and comprised of urban design and architecture experts from the USA, Europe, South America and East Asia, Scotland and the rest of the UK.

They brought together international expertise and experience with local expertise sensitive to issues specific to the Highlands and the inner Moray Firth.

Purpose of project:

To involve local people and businesses in the planning of the Tornagrain site and long-term housing planning.

Project activities:

The Charrette comprised of three large public meetings, the first of which set the scene and included a presentation on the the charrette process and the basic principles of traditional urban design. The second meeting allowed for discussions on specific issues such as transport as well as open designs for the town plan.

At the mid-charrette 'pin-up' the options for the new town design were publically revealed and discussed.

The third and final meeting refined the contents of the final Masterplan, which is presented to all at the end of the meeting.

In total approximately six hundred people attended the various meetings.

Project results:

People were able to discuss in depth the Tornagrain proposal and the corridor development as a whole, and have real input into the Masterplan for the area.

A newsletter was distributed to participants and those interested but who could not attend.

The results from the Design Charrette formed of the A96 Corridor Strategy which was approved by the Council in March 2007. It will form part of the next draft Development Plan which shall be subject to further public consultations.
