Background to project:

Piloting Participatory budgeting in Newcastle

Purpose of project:

Following on from the £30,000 spent last year in Lemington, Denton and Woolsington through participatory budgeting there will now be £70,000 worth of U decide money to be spent in 2007.

The U decide team help local people and groups to develop ideas that will be put forward to a big voting event in October, where local people are given the power to spend public money, to benefit their communities.

Project activities:

There are four steps for local communities and groups to be involved.

Step One: Local people decide what areas they want the U decide money to be spent on.

Step Two: Local people come up with ideas for projects (with help from the U decide team). Last year's successful projects included new equipment for a boxing group

There is a U decide working group made up of 30 local residents who work alongside six council officers and a member of the Participatory Budgeting Unit at Newcastle City Council.

Project results:

Projects funded in 2006 included new homes for bats and birds in Woolsington Village, £2,200 awarded to D2 Youth Zone in Newbiggin Hall Estate for outdoor activities, Westerhope Bowling Club awarded money for new seats and to hold tea dances.
