Background to project:

YouGov is an independent research agency. They are commissioned by a wide range of clients from media, to academics, to companies, to not-for-profit organisations.

Anyone can become a YouGov panel member by registering on their website. Members are given their own account which is credited depending on the length and type of survey. Participants are only paid when they reach the �50 mark.


Purpose of project:

To provide online opinion polls that are active samples. Only a proportion of members are invited for each survey, to ensure there is accurate represention of the particular population being researched and is based on a complex system of filling demographic quotas.

YouGov also publicises other opinion polls that have been published in the national press or media.


Project activities:

Surveys of current opinions are divided into the following topics:
  • Social
  • Political
  • Economic
  • Europe
  • Iraq
  • Consumer

All results can be downloaded as pdf files. Information about participants normally includes age, gender and social grade, as well as sometimes religion and party support.


Project results:

Recent surveys include the smoking ban, internet dating, casinos, political leader trends, voting intentions, floods, drug and mobile phone usage.
