This section provides you with basic information about this site.

People & Participation is based on Involve's successful book by the same name which was launched in 2005. The book provides a useful summary of participatory methods and practice but given the number of methods and speed of the development of new methods it is impossible for a printed publication to stay accurate for long. The reason for transferring People & Participation to the web is to allow us to maintain more, and more up to date information about participation. It also allows use as the site user to add your knowledge and experience making the site a truly collaborative experience, something that a book simply cannot do.
The site has been developed by Involve
and Headshift
. Involve is a not for profit organisation which specialises in understanding and promoting new forms of public
participation. Headshift is an innovative new media company which specialises in designing participative sites. Edward Andersson (Involve) and Christoph Schmaltz (Headshift) have been the primary developers with support from a number of other staff members.
People & Participation.net is generously funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government
(Community Empowerment Division), the Ministry of Justice
(Democratic Engagement Branch) and the Sustainable Development Commission
.
The site aims to be a central portal for information and inspiration about participation to practitioners across the world. We believe that the methods and principles we promote through these sites will be of use to people in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Whilst much of the information is written for a British audience many of the principles are still relevant to people outside the UK.
Numerous people have contributed to the site, we wish to acknowledge all those who have commented on the text of the site, uploaded case studies and resources as well as the photographers who have made their photos available under a creative commons licence. Also we would like to acknowledge the help we have had from the many practitioners who have helped us with the methods descriptions.
See the disclaimer for information about the terms of use for the site.
