Purpose
Agreeing a clear purpose is the most important stage of any engagement process. No process should proceed without it.
A good purpose has clear outcomes and outputs which are clearly explained. A bad purpose is poorly defined and open to many different interpretations.
A good purpose does not need to be limited or prescriptive, but must be easy to understand and an accurate reflection of what is going to happen.
It is important that that all key players are aware of and supportive of the purpose of a process. Too often different purposes exist within the same organisation, only coming to light when the process is already under way, which can be both damaging and embarrassing.
The agreed purpose provides a reference point throughout the process. A clear purpose also gives participants the opportunity to make an informed choice about getting involved.
